台灣跟美國的學校制度不同，所以在翻譯全校第幾名時需要特別注意，以免產生誤解，以下是標準的英文翻譯:

全校第三名 = I am currently ranked number three in the school.
全班第三名 = I am currently ranked number three in my class.
這學期全校第三名 = I am ranked number three in the school this semester.
全校期末考第一名 = I got the highest score on the school-wide final exam.
全校期末考第三名 = I got the third highest score on the school-wide final exam.
我的物理課拿第三名 = I am ranked number three in my physics class.

在美國的學校，每個年級可以畢業那一年來表示，例如 the class of 2000 指 2000 年畢業的學生，在這些學生中拿到第三名可說:

I am ranked number three in the class of 2000.

事實上，這就指全校第三名，因為全校第三名就等於跟我同年的學生中拿到第三名。

第一名的英文不一定要有 number one 的字眼，老美常常用 the top of 來表示。
