This time around, president candidate Tsai Ying Wen's campaign slogan is "Light up Taiwan". She means illuminate Taiwan and make it known around the world or bring it out of its dark age or stuff. But the thing is however I see and read the slogan, it just gets across to me like burn up Taiwan. The usage is quite often in a lot of movies when someone wants to burn a man or a building like "Light that motherfu*** up" or "Light'em up and show them". What is the first response of native speaker about the slogan? Is it ambiguous?

"Brighten up Taiwan" might be less ambiguous and less controversial than "Light up Taiwan".

Maybe you could try to talk her into critical modification of political slogan for presidential campaign so that she won't make a fool of herself due to improper design of campaign slogan.

Actually "light up Taiwan" means make Taiwan more prominent to the people of Taiwan only. To say that you're making Taiwan more prominent in the world, it would be something like "highlighting Taiwan."
